Pennsylvania Financial Literacy Legislation & Educational Stats

The densely-populated state of Pennsylvania can claim more than half again as many total students, schools, and teachers than the national averages (Common Core of Data, 2014-2015): 3,097 schools (vs. 1,972), 1,743,160 students (vs. 986,521), and 122,029 teachers (vs. 61,418). Pennsylvania’s pupil-to-teacher ratio lies just below the national average at 14.28 (vs. 16.06).

During the 2015 legislative session, Pennsylvania legislators considered five policies related to financial education, two of which were adopted. The two laws adopted were to recognize April as Financial Literacy Month. Notably, H.B. 328, currently being debated in the House of Representatives, would “provide for a capstone course in personal finance as graduation requirement” for high school students (National Conference of State Legislatures, 2015).
